At the very end of the 1970's the punk subculture started to arise. That style preceded to get even larger in the 1980s. Naturally the punk culture influenced cosmetic trends. Pop stars like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper wore dark eccentric clothing with lots of studs and metal detailing. Women in the 1980's were not afraid to wear bold colors on their lips and eyes. Along with the bright eyeshadow, women would wear heavy mascara and think eyeliner. This bold look complimented the large hair styles of the day.
On the other hand, another popular 80s fashion trend was the emergence of the "preppy" trend. This style was quite different from punk as it was a highly aspirational yet understated look. Preppy women tended to have short hair and little makeup in order to embody the sense of an effortless beauty. Their cosmetic choices coordinated with their fashion and lifestyle choices. The preppy culture was centered around relaxation and sporting.
Pink Cheeks: One trend that was widely used by the punk culture or those who embodied the vibrancy of the 80's was having bright pink blush. It was trendy for women to buy foundation that was a bit higher than their natural skin tone. Then they would apply the blush along their cheek bones and the contrast of colors would really make the cheeks pop. The fair skin also contributed to making the dark eyeshadow appear even more dramatic.
Men in Makeup: The 80's was one of the first decades where it became more social acceptable for men to experiment with cosmetics. Male punk rock stars would certainly use heavy makeup to shock their audience. This era was also a period when the popularity in drag began to rise.
